IN PRINT · EXTENDED READING
In God Is Red: The Secret Story of How Christianity Survived and Flourished in Communist China, writer Liao Yiwu uses interviews and journeys to portray Christian lives across China. One section follows Dr. Luke Sun through northern Yunnan and places his medical and pastoral service within a wider account of faith, suffering, dignity and service.
Liao introduces Dr. Sun as a physician accustomed to moving from village to village. In December 2005, the two traveled through northern Yunnan toward Zehei.
Dr. Sun contacted local church leaders before the visit and helped the writer meet Elder Zhang and his wife, connecting medical presence, pastoral relationships and local memory.
During the journey, Dr. Sun pointed out the former Southwestern Theological Seminary, helping connect present-day rural Christian life with an earlier chapter of mission history.
The English edition was translated by Wen Huang and published by HarperOne in 2011. This page presents the book as an independent literary and journalistic account, not as Dr. Sun’s official biography or as independent verification by Mustard Seed Rescue Center.
